The specific objectives of the Center are as follows: 1) to raise the degree of awareness of the importance of suicide prevention; 2) to conduct scientific research related to suicide; 3) to develop, publicize and promote effective suicide prevention strategies; 4) to develop and promote local and national suicide prevention plans and evaluate their effectiveness; 5) to coordinate and promote governmental and non-governmental organizations to practice effective suicide prevention plans together; 6) to train psychiatric clinicians, mental health facility administrators and researchers with necessary knowledge and skills to aid in the reduction of suicides within China. The overall goal of these objectives is to reduce the huge economic and social burden of suicide for both families and the country.
